I finally came up with a way to post something new on here… edit an old post. That’s what it’s come to.
The blog was taken down for 2 days this weekend without warning. I wrote a couple emails, no response, but the blog was up and running like nothing happened on Monday. So, I did as much catching up as possible, but this morning I wanted to do more posting and had to “Submit for Review.”
Bottom line is we’re gonna move the blog to www.universoulproductions.com as soon as I can figure out how to or someone helps me with it.
PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF OUR MOVE AND THE ADDRESS ABOVE
I can’t tell you how good it feels to promote quality in the culture and bring like-minded people like yourselves together to share it with. I hope you all make the move with us and HOLD TIGHT UNTIL WE GET IT TOGETHER.
OH YEAH… DIG DEEP INTO THE BLOG!!!! There is sooo much goodness in the blog’s archives. Do searches in the search window on the right. Search for your favorite artists or phrases like “crunch galaxy.” ALSO, swim through the links. At some point, I realized I should include links to related posts at the bottom of every post, so since that point in time, I went through the entire blog and added related links at the bottom of every post. DON’T SLEEP. Just want to make sure you all get the most out of the time I spent putting this together.
From my top 2 producers on the mic, here is Diamond D’s first leak of his new album, The Huge Hefner Chronicles, set to release October 14. I really love Diamond D’s swagger on the mic. Nottz is a dope producer too.
Man.. I’m soo glad they put the blog back up. I was afraid it might be gone forever. I never made contact with anyone, talked to anyone, or anything like that. My site dissappeared Sunday and just popped back up.
Much love and respect to those who wrote me emails, texts, and called me to express their feelings about the blog being down. ”That’s real to a brotha like me babeh” – Meth
I’m backing this whole thing up and we’ll be moving sooner than later to www.universoulproductions.com.
‘Til then, stay tuned. It’s gonna take me a little while to catch back up to speed.
Hope all is lovely in everyone’s world. Keep supporting that good shhh. Love y’all.
It’s FINALE’s birthday today, so here’s a little tribute to one of the more progressive lyricist in the game.
FINALE and I lived together for a little less than a year or so. This was at the tail end of recording the FINALE & Spier 1200 – Develop album (cop it at that link). Here are a few of my favorites from the album (I couldn’t find YouTube videos of my other favorite tracks and don’t want to leak anything with out permission. There was also a track called “Two Desperadoes” that was one of my favorites that I JUST realized didn’t make it to the album. Maybe FINALE will let me leak that one since I don’t think it’ll ever be used for a project??) :
“All About Us” Featuring Neco Redd
“Eye Of The Beholder” Featuring Invincible & Elzhi
You should all be familiar with the FINALE track on THE GREEN ALBUM, called “Mean Green”. That track was originally written for a NOTTZ beat. FINALE and I recorded the verse you heard at my crib in Michigan. He re-recorded that verse and the rest of the song later on, but this version was way more raw and just better to me.
Here’s a clip of FINALE rockin’ a classic jam that House Shoes produced about 5 years ago called “No More Mister Nice Guy” (before the Spier album)
I’m sticking to YouTube video because I don’t have permission to leak the mounds of goodness I have from FINALE, but I’m gonna be back in Detroit in 10 days and I hope to do a spotlight on my brotha, so stay tuned. He’s got much better songs recorded than some of these although these are still good.
Here’s another older jam that FINALE and Invincible did with Dabrya called “Get It Together”
Let’s just get to some newer stuff. This is an instant classic.
Invincible feat. Finale “Locusts” docu-music-video Pt. 1
Check the links below for other posts related to FINALE and keep an eye out. He’s got a RIDICULOUS solo album comin’ out soon!
If you’re new to Weekend Freakin’ (check this link), this is a time for nostalgia, boogie, electro, breakdancin’, and also a time for gettin’ freaky funk nasty any way you see fit. So let’s get to it…
Shock – “Electrophonic Phunk”
It’s crazy finding this on YouTube. I found this 45 about 8-9 years ago. I (DJ Bacuzzi Luv a.k.a. Freak Funk Nasty) remember playing it at this Rossignol Snowboards party I through up at Boyne Mountain, Michigan. I told everyone this was gonna be my favorite record of the night. They dug it, but it kinda went over their heads.
Here’s a couple photos from that night real quick (the whole set of photos can be found inthis flickr link):
Now that’s some Weekend Freakin’.. nah’mean! ; )
Bananarama – “Cruel Summer” (198)
If you haven’t put together where you’ve heard that song before, let me refresh your memory.. hilarious!
Q – “The Voice of Q” (1982)
Carol Hahn – “Do Your Best” (1982)
The song writing and singing could have been better, but the beat is real nasty at times
I think this is genius and I can’t believe I didn’t think of it already. The machines in gyms require a massive amount of energy to function. At the same time, people working out are burning a ton of energy while they exercise. It only makes sense to use machines that convert that energy and use it to power the gym. Big up the Green Microgym in Portland, OR for being proactive.
Illusion Labs just released this new skateboarding game for iPhones only that allows you to control the board and tricks with you fingers on the touch screen. Just watch the video.
Only thing I’ll say before letting Illusion Labs tell you more about this, is either the guy playing the game has wack style and/or the game has wack style. That board is flipping in all sorts of sloppy ways. Get it together man! Haha.
I think this is actually a great idea and will hopefully get better as Illusion Labs improves the game, style, etc.
Yes, it’s official! Illusion Labs brings you the world’s first true multi-touch game for the iPhone. The board is controlled by using finger gestures similar to the legs and feet of a real skater. The dynamic and innovative controls together with the game being built on a high quality physics engine gives the players a high degree of freedom to come up with their own tricks.
Following our Game 2.0 philosophy the games comes with an online level editor open to the community to create and publish their own skateparks.Touchgrind will be available in the iPhone App Store in October.
Every fan of skateboarding is a fan of Gino (I sincerely hope). Gino has almost become a mythical legend since you rarely see him, constantly hear about his greatness and style. Well, Epicly Later’d somehow managed to reach Gino and get him to do this spotlight on him.
Ypulse is a media platform for youth media and marketing professionals. Ypulse publishesa blog, Ypulse.com; a newsletter, the Ypulse Daily Update; and produces several conferenceseach year, the Ypulse Mashup events.
Very nice. I knew is was Zo’s birthday and actually hit him off with an email a couple days ago.. haven’t heard back yet, but here is something even better… A new Zo! track.
I found this track on Kenny Fresh’s new blogFresh Selects. You can bet we’ve added it to our RSS feeds and will be referencing it regularly.
Inspired by the Jones Girls “Nights Over Egypt,” Zo! has done a bunch of these really dope covers in the time that I’ve known him and they’ve all been really good.
My homey Alex of at On-Pointe.be did a cool post on my good friend Drew/Haircut/Mayer Hawthorne. The article touches on how Haircut got together with Stones Throw and bit about the album.
I can tell you personally that after hearing 6-7 tracks from the album, it amazing! There’s a new “Mayer” in town and he’s bringing some real soulful doo-wop back. Haircut plays almost every instrument in every song, original lyrics except for a couple covers (at least one that I know of), and I think is the only vocalist on the album (gonna have to double check that).
My homey Ollie from the land down under brought this HipHopDX article to my attention about a New Bill To Stop File Sharing, passed introducing (thanks D) in the US congress.
I’m interested in how they’re gonna go about doing it. Take this blog for instance… I try not to post any new tracks that the artists and their label haven’t leaked for promotional use. Is that going to become illegal? How about mixtapes?
I can’t say I dissagree with some sort of crack down on file sharing. I admitedly become one of the biggest downloaders the day I found out about Napster. I sat there downloading as much as I could think of. Discovering new music, recovering old, filling in gaps, etc. I was buying almost all my music on vinyl so being about to download digital music for free was GREAT!
I do believe there is a way to “crack down” on the type of file sharing that’s killing sales without stopping people from breathing new life into music that would never be heard if it weren’t for some of the great tastemakers out there sharing it with us.
I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Until then, we’ll keep feeding you as much goodness as we possibly can in the most ethical way we see fit.
Love y’all… support good music. Buy it, share it, go to the shows, etc. Peace.
I haven’t heard this yet, but trust Kevin’s suggestion to download it if you’re a Prince fan, which I certainly am. I’ll let Kev do the rest of the talking.
If you all are feeling that new Black Milk beat tape, you’ll probably like this joint that landed in my inbox a few days ago. This mix is actually 4 years old, but I just got a hold of it recently. The One took the whole Purple Rain soundtrack and remixed it, including dialogue from the movie as well. Definitely a must for any Prince fan.
I’m actually okay with posting this only because the beat tape that Black Milk put out was for free and you can’t sue someone if they didn’t make any money from sampling your music. Nevertheless, Kevin Nottingham and crew, who put this together, decided not to include the tracklist in the post so that it won’t show up in “google searches” and attract attention.
Black Milk is without a doubt on of the more influential and progressive producers out there. Along with a select few, he is helping to carry that Detroit gritty soul sound into a new age. Big up brotha.
I got a bunch of juicy info and music from the looong-awaited new Q-Tip album, TheRenaissance, due to drop November 4th fromDeviation.
The album will have guest appearances from Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, J Dilla, Norah Jones, Madlib, Common, D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiq & Santogold.
Personally, that’s nearly the greatest line-up of guests I could dream up for a Q-Tip type album, except for Lupe. I’m just not that big of a fan (not hating).
Here are a couple jams from the album:
The first track is over Dilla’s “Som Spooky Shit” beat
After hearing these songs along with “Gettin’ Up”, the lead single from the album, I am more excited than ever for the album’s release.
On his website Tip says: “People always ask me WHO is on the album. People always ask me WHEN the album is coming out. The real question is WHY? I wrote this album because the world needs a renaissance.”
‘The Rennaisance’ will be Q-Tip’s first official release since 1999’s Jay Dee-produced “Amplified”, despite having put together projects for Arista since then under the name “Kamaal the Abstract” that never saw official release. The 2001 sampler that featured some Deviation favourites like “Feelin’” has since become a sought after 12″, maybe cuts like these will sometime also see the light of day. - Deviation
Let me tell you somethin’, everything I’ve ever heard from Appletree, which is limited to what I’ve posted in the links below, has been outstanding! These guys have excellent quality control and taste in music. I’m a fan and need to do some more digging into their archives. Somebody pay me to make this my day job and the world will be a better place! ; )
Nelson & Djosa (two dope producers), presentthis Stevie Wonder mix on behalf of Appletree. Sooo good. There are some songs on here I’ve never heard before and you probably haven’t either.
“Stevie Wonder’s a musical genius!” – can you tell me who said that?
I kinda like this song. Just hearing it now for the first time. I like parts of it a lot and other parts just a little. Production is pretty good and the hook is hypnotic. Check it out, the debut single from thecocknbullkid and this other track “Shake”. Out and available on Need Now Future Records.
I downloaded this track a couple days ago and liked it, but wasn’t sure it deserved to be posted.. Well, it does. I like the way these guys rhyme a lot and you can feel their love for Hip Hop, not just another couple fools rhyming to be cool or whatever. Some authentic love. Here’s what I just found on their myspace.
Hello. We are folk&stress. We are biological brothers and we make music together. We both rap and make beats. We also breakdance and write graffiti just kidding. We live together and are always in the studio recording and mastering our craft. We have a record coming out called “the box.” with Gza, blu, aesop, vast aire of the legendary can ox, and wu-tang producer/artist bronze nazareth. Our friends preservation and pushakey also produced tracks on the record. The one and only dreddy kruger a&r’ed the record with us over the course of 6 weeks in lower manhattan. Dreddy put us through hip-hop boot camp. We take nothing for granted. Everything that has occured is a blessing. We are always checking the myspace so feel free to ask us any questions. The record is called the box cause you are either in or your out. Thats it.
Word. I’m really glad Greg got some love for this. Head over to Okayplayer to see it and learn about Vortices until I get this blog onto my website and be able to embed these videos.
I do remember that the coolest part of the video was when she’s talking about how her and the Roots try to throw each other off every show by doing something random like running across the stage in a bra (Badu obviously). She really loves and appreciates good music and that’s really dope to me too.
I was over at Greg’s crib couple weeks ago and he was showing me this video and a bunch of others. Dude really loves the music and is in it for all the right reasons. Plus he’s got a gang of great footage. Now he just needs an HD camera.. haha. You hear that Greg? Start saving up! You can’t go on with that small digital thing you got. Haha.
My Friends from the Netherlands put it so well, I’m just gonna let them do the speaking. My only suggestion is to download this podcast and spend the $6 on the EP:
Georgia Anne Muldrow’s Modular Lovedrum Safari is the latest instrumental excursion from the LA beatmaker/singer best known for her work with PPP & Dudley Perkins, as well as her solo releases on Stones Throw. I mentioned Causecast.org before. I really like what they’re doing and they just recently made their debut at TechCrunch50 a couple days ago in San Francisco.

Watch this! We have always strayed away from political posts, but times are getting very serious as we approach election time and now that Sarah Palin has joined McCain, things are scarier than ever.
HipHopDX has a cool interview with Prince Po of Organized Konfusion. He talks about reuniting with Pharoahe Monch for a new track and possibly more. He talks about a bunch of new projects including an entire album with Oh No and one with a few emcees, one of which is my homeyLeaf Erikson.
Check out the article here. It’s a decent read for any Organized Konfusion fan.
This could potentially be the official version of the song(check this link for Kanye West – Love Lockdown (Mastered) (free download)). We postedthe live version and videoa couple days ago. Whether it is or isn’t, it’s gonna do fine for right now. This is almost definitely off of Kanye’s new album 808s and Heartbreak, which is set to release in December. Enjoy and don’t sleep on the rest of the goodness linked at the bottom of the page.
Wow. Jimbalaya, who likely comments more on the blog that anyone else (in a good way), blessed us withthis link to a whole bunch of YouTube videos of Damu making beats. Some of them are Damu remaking a classic beat like something produced by Premier, Pete Rock, or Large Pro. He remakes the beat right there on his MPC 2000. Check it out. I’ll just bless you with one of the 20+ videos on there.
Not only is the skating really good, but someone finally decided to edit the skating to the music. Thank you! I thought everyone was gonna start doing that 8 years ago, but it suddenly stopped.
Onra is a really dope producer from Paris. I’ve kinda spaced posting much from him.
In 2006, I collaborated with french producer Quetzal and the result is“Onra & Quetzal present Tribute”. A hip-hop tribute to soul music. Soulful instrumentals that sound like hip-hop remixes to soul songs from late 60’s to late 70’s. We released the album in CD and there’s one 7″ vinyl.
I also worked with pianist Byron The Aquarius from Alabama, USA.
Together we are The Big Payback. Byron plays Fender Rhodes and synths, and I program the drum beats. We met on Myspace, started working together overnight, and made 30+ tracks in a few months. All songs were made late 2005/early 2006.
We got a track called “Cosmic Travelling” on Beat Dimensions compilation, selected by Jay Scarlett and Cinnaman, released by dutch label Rush Hour, available everywhere.
We’re signed on this upcoming Japanese label called Circulations. Roster includes Shawn J Period, Pure P (Up Hygh), Reggie B, Super Smoky Soul, Morgan Spacek to name a few… We’re also signed on Just Like, a french label. There are two different 12″ vinyls and one album on cd. Also, Check out the new track The Big Payback feat. Reggie B “New Worlds”, soon to be available in vinyl.
Below we have a couple new beats I found at Astro Nautico’s blog. The tracks come from Onra’s album Chinoiseries, in stores now. See below:
I started this project in August 2006, when I got back from a trip to Viet Nam, the land of my grandparents. As a vinyl junky, I really couldn’t come back to France without bringing back some wax. After hours spent riding on a motorbike in Saigon streets, a taxi finally helped me find some old Asian records. I was feeling like an explorer discovering a forgotten treasure. I bought almost 30 vinyls, most of them in poor condition, went back to the crib, and started making beats with some material that I wasn’t used to.
WOW!!! First, let’s bask in the thought of having this near where we live and being able to skate it whenever we want.
See that tiny guy up top with his hands up in the air? He’s can’t even skate right now.. he’s praising the gods for making this park a reality.
The big news is, you can thank whoever is donating 30,000,000 Swedish Kroner, a little more than €3.000.000 Euro!!! I’ve tried to figure out who is making the donation, but I have no idea. Sweden’sHighvalley Skatepark in Stockholm will be ready to skate in 2010.
Europe is sounding better and better every day. Someone get me a job out there!!! Please!!! I’m packing my bags soon as I get one! I’m dead serious.
Another classic from Kevin Nottingham and crew. We banged this album pretty hard when it came out. It was pretty much impossible to fuck with any production from Premier, let alone entire albums, which is what he was doing most of at the time.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of two greats of Brasilian music in the past week.
It is now with a sad irony that Primo has joined Dilla. We will miss him. The boyish smile, the indefatigable enthusiasm and the deep spiritual wisdom. Our hearts go out to his family and Patricia.
Maestre Salustiano was one of the greats of Pernambucano culture. His mastery of the Rabeca, his humor and his incredible music will leave a strong light on the city of Recife. He was filmed by us for a forthcoming documentary. His wisdom, wit and generosity made our fist day of shooting pass with incredible pleasure. His version of Asa Branca on the Rabeca (African Violin) brought tears to my eyes and clearly expressed his understanding of Nordestino Culture. The heavens will be brighter with his arrival.
Secondly and even closer to our camp is DJ Primo. What can be said of this man. He was an extraordinary person. As Cut observed We dont speak the same language but me and this guy can speak through our scratches. We met Primo in 2002 when he was first in Sao Paulo he fell in easily with the whole Mochilla crew. His sincerity and sensitivity beyond language was quickly apparent. He sat in for the tribute to Dilla from the 2006 SESC show. See here Beautiful Brazilian dedication to J Dilla!
This is incredibly dope and well done. Basically, Shaun Boothe narrates the biography of James Brown from birth to death through a rap. The video includes relevant photos and video to go along with it. It’s really a must watch.
This is only the 1st of 12 “Unauthorized Biographies” that Shaun Boothe will be doing. The next one is Bob Marley.

Some Detroit/Michigan goodness for ya below (in each of the posts below are links at the bottom that’ll help you navigate to other related goodness):
Here’s a new track that Blu posted up on his myspace. My man has a real dope way of expressing himself and what is really going on in his life and/or mind in a way the listener can enjoy and relate to.
Don’t forget that the Johnson & Jonson album drops Sept. 23rd. Should be a good one!
