I apologize for slacking a bit the last week with the posts. It’s been a super busy week and now I gotta pack up and head out to Mammoth for that Superpark party.
There’s still plenty of goodness posted this week as usual and more than enough in the depths of the blog, so dig on.
“Apparently this is an unfinished joint that’s supposed to be on Dr. Dre’s highly anticipated album called Detox. Much like the Miguel/Ne-Yo, Karina Pasian/Cassie joints, this isn’t actually Dr. Dre but a ghostwriter named Prophet who works closely with the Aftermath camp. The song is called It’s Like That and it’s produced by Dr. Dre and WallStreet.” - The Exactly
I think it’s really dope that they have put together a well paying contest for AMs. I also like that the contest will have several stops. It does not however help me and others that do not live in the San Diego county. If you do however, I strongly suggest checking this out if you’re a fan of skateboarding on any level. AMs have always killed it, but today they simply disgusting.

He done did it again. This time with Chemistry. I really got into this album on a trip to Philly visiting my brother a few years ago. It was the first time I really felt like Buckshot sounded good on a project that wasn’t the entire clik’s since earlier Black Moon albums. I still think that not only he, but the whole crew, sounds really good over 9th’s production. Something about the contrast between raw over smooth that sounds great.

Another little killer on the rise. What impresses me most is his solid style. Granted he’s going big and all that, but I feel numb from all the bangers today to really be moved by that. Style is something that takes a while to develop and something some skaters will never have. I definitely look forward enjoying the years to come from this kid.
This is outstanding. I’ll let you read it for yourself, but the Bootsy’s effort and this hilarious story that I was not aware of are both outstanding.
The J.B.’s have long been one of my favorite groups of all time. They were pioneers and blazed the trail not only for funkateers to follow, but laid the groundwork for a LOT of hip hop.
Above: The original JB’s lineup in 1970. Bootsy is third from the left in the top row.
Before he was a stunna shades pioneer/bass player for P-Funk, Bootsy Collins was an original member of James Brown’s band The J.B.’s. Legend has it that he was actually kicked out of the group in 1971 during a mid-show acid trip, when he walked off stage because he believed his guitar had turned into a snake.
Regardless of how it went down, the flamboyant bassist is paying tribute to the Godfather James Brown by reuniting with the J.B.’s for a dedication tour, starting September 25th. Although the legendary Bobby Byrd also passed away recently, Collins rallied Byrd’s son, JB’s daughter, and original J.B.s members John “Jabo” Starks, Clyde Stubblefield, and brother Catfish Collins. Last year, the crew proved they can still bring the funk when they scored Superbad. After the jump, watch a classic clip of the band tearing down a Paris stage in 1971 while performing “Ain’t it Funky Now.”
For those who don’t know, I will be releasing “THE GREEN ALBUM” the same day Al Green will be releasing “Lay It Down”. THE GREEN ALBUM is a project I’ve had mostly finished for 3 years now. It’s a full-length hip hop remix album over all Al Green sample-made beats. Most of the songs being remixed come from hip hop’s “golden era.” Artist such as De La Soul, Mos Def, Big L, Ghostface, Method Man, Notorious B.I.G., Pharcyde, Fugees, Jay-Z, Das Efx, and Slum Village. I added a few other artists that I’m a fan of such as MF DOOM, Saukrates, and FINALE (from Detroit).
One my greatest challenges was finding the acapellas I wanted to work with. Tons of groups like Smif n Wesson, The Roots, ATCQ, and plenty other didn’t really have acapellas to their older music that I wanted to remix. Also, I would have loved to remix MY favorite song on an album instead of the hit single, but you can’t find those acapellas.
Regressing, it took Al Green uniting with Questlove to make the most awaited Al Green album in years for me do finish THE GREEN ALBUM and finally share it with the world. Over the past month, I’ve been putting a few small finishing touches on songs and bouncing each pro tools track so I can bring them over to my boy Haircut for mixing and mastering.
The idea is to start leaking some of the songs a week or so before “Lay It Down” comes out. Then drop the album the same day… MY BIRTHDAY. Yes.. the stars aligned. My favorite artist of all time, Al Green (along with Bob Marley) will be dropping his album on my birthday. What better time for me to finish THE GREEN ALBUM?
Below is the sample for “Lay It Down.” It sounds like Al Green. It sounds like the Al Green I think we all want to hear. Check it out and stay tuned for THE GREEN ALBUM.
The official sampler for Al Green’s new Blue Note record, “Lay It Down”.
UniverSOUL Productions & Snowboarder Mag will be hosting the official Superpark After-Party this Friday at Sushi Rei in Mammoth.
I will be DJing the entire night starting around 9pm - 2am. Music will range from Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, to more Electro, 80s, and more dance driven funk later in the night.
While we’re on a world music kick today, I’ve been meaning to put y’all up on a band that I’ve been seriously digging for a few months now. I think the first time I really listened to their music was while I was in Austria visiting friends. I went on a solo hike up this mountain nearby and Ofege was the soundtrack. There music is SO GOOD. From what I gather, it’s very rare as well. If you run a search, you won’t find much and these days, if it’s not on the internet, cats aren’t really hip to it yet.
This documentary is super dope and makes me extremely jealous.
I regularly checkIn Dangerous Rhythm. The dude has a ridiculous knowledge of soul music. Below is the letter Frank Conakry (the guy in the video) sent him along with the video.
“NY based documentary film maker Leigh Iacobucci followed me around on my latest one-month digging trip through Ghana, Togo and Benin. This is a first trailer she put together after being back home for only a few days. There’ll be another, better trailer within a few days and perhaps also a live clip with Gilles Gnonnas performing his fathers’ Afrobeat bomb “okpo videa bassouo” (on the Life Is A Game Mix).
We also had interviews with El Rego (green hat), Gustave Bentho (from Poly Rythmo seen with his bass) and Danialou Sagbohan (multi-instrumentalist who played with Poly Rythmo in the 70s, spent years playing at the Afro Spot in Lagos and is still one of Benin’s most respected musicians. He broke open a bottle of Black Label at 8:00 am while singing, dancing and drumming on the table… good times!).”
This is one of my favorite Frank N Dank tracks, plus I thought it was pretty appropriate considering the craze right now over Dilla’s MCA album. ”I told y’all before, Frank N Dank forever. With Dilla on the track, so muthafuckas whateva.”
You definitely wanna check for this dude. It’s like Bootsy Collins has been reborn under an even crunchier, electro sound. Soon as I find some free time, I’m gonna look for some more of his music. In the meantime, enjoy this one.
Recloose (Matt Chicoine) is a early 30s musician/producer/DJ originally from Detroit who moved to Titahi Bay New Zealand in 2001. Here’s a cool new joint from him.
This video is great. It’s better than good. Watch it. I just watched the entire thing all the way through on the first click. I was just cruisin’ through the blog roll, lookin’ for more goodness to post on here and bam… jewelz! I was hooked.
Read This. Kovar wrote what I found to be a refreshingly genuine story about discovering Dilla.
I’m sitting here bouncing one track at a time of each of The Green Album tracks so I can get them to Haircut to mix and master, listening to KT’s beat CD, spacin’ of my girl Tif’s blunt she just smoked with me, and I find that post from Kovar’s blog while checking incoming links to the blog.
There’s no question that today, Dilla has become a fall-back favorite. A lot of people are shouting Dilla cuz there’s no argument to it. No one’s gonna tell you that you’re wrong. But it’s not the same as truly appreciating the man, the passion and soul he poured into his music, the originality, swagger, honesty, quality control, and pureness of the man.
“To commemorate what would have been legendary Street/Pop artist KEITH HARING’s 50th birthday this Sunday, May 4th, DEITCH PROJECTS, in collaboration with THE KEITH HARING FOUNDATION, have recreated the legendary mural painted by the late artist in the summer of 1982 on Houston Street at Bowery in what was then the center of the downtown art & gallery scene.” -Supertouch
This show is packed with dope art. I’m making it a point to check it. Below is what I found onSWINDLE Mag.
Scion’s Installation 4, “It’s a Beautiful World,” will open in Los Angeles, the last of nine cities on the national tour, on May 10. The innovative Scion Installation Art Tour launched its fourth installment last July and features a diverse array of artists from around the world. The theme, “It’s a Beautiful World,” was interpreted by each artist, in one of four mediums—painting, photography, sculpture, and collage. The culmination of the tour is accompanied by a live auction where all of the artwork will be auctioned off to the public, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward art related charities.
This year’s artists include: Andrew Pommier, Andy Mueller, Angela Boatwright, Blaine Fontana, Blek LeRat, Books llll, Caia Koopman, Chris Yormick, Cody Hudson, Dalek, David Choe, Eye One, Francesco LoCastro, Freddi C, J. Shea, James Jean, Jeff Soto, Joshua Krause, Kelsey Brookes, Kenton Parker, Kofie, Mel Kadel, Michael Sieben, Mike Giant, Rammellzee, RETNA, R. Grimes, Ron English, Sam Flores, Sage Vaughn, Skwerm, Tim McCormick, Travis Millard and The London Police.
The final tour stop and auction will be held in Los Angeles, at the Scion Installation L.A. space in the Culver City Arts District May 10 - June 1, 2008. Most all of the Installation 4 artists will attend the opening night of the show on May 10. The opening reception will take place from 8 pm–10 pm at 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, Calif., 90232.
The live auction will take place on June 1, at the Scion Installation L.A. Space, from 4 pm – 7 pm (auction begins promptly at 5 pm), as well as online and on phone lines. All the money raised from the auction will go directly to Art From Scrap, an organization encouraging creative expression in the arts and promoting a greater understanding of environmental issues.

This mobtage from Tha Clinic has got some great skating in it. I’m definitely diggin’ it. Brian Herman, Terry Kennedy, Kevin Booker, John Lupfer and more.
Big up The Smoking Section for posting this. This store was just around the corner from my crib in Oak Park, MI. The whole Record TIme chain has been a big part of the music scene in and around Detroit. It’s independently owned and they supported good music. It’s really sad to hear that they had to close. Much like the skate community, record shops are cultural hubs where like-minded people got together for similar reasons, bumped into each other, chopped it up, etc. A part of our culture is definitely dying as these shops continue to disappear. R.I.P. Record TIme Ferndale.
Here’s a great departure from all the Hip Hop that’s posted on the blog. Awesome Color is awesome for these reasons:
1) Their music rocks - 60s psychedelic rock influence
2) From Michigan
3) Skateboarders
4) I don’t think they care much at all about anything but doing what they enjoy
Below is an interview I found on Vice Mag’s blog.
Vice: I heard there was some sort of weirdness with your signing to Ecstatic Peace. What happened with that?
Derek Stanton (vocals, guitar): We got a myspace from Thurston Moore—we thought it was a joke—that was basically like, “Hey give me a call,” and a few months later we were doing the record. We were kind of reluctant to sign the deal and we didn’t actually sign until the day before it came out when we were basically forced to. Everything was done but we hadn’t signed the contract and it had to be done, so we signed it on top of a skateboard because we were outside skating and there was no desk or anything. Then we pushed the board into the middle of the street and watched everyone run after it. Mark Ibold videotaped it. We weren’t trying to be mean or rude or anything—it was symbolic basically.
Skating seems to be an important catalyst for the band.
Allison Busch (drums): It’s how we met. Michael had a skate band called Violent Ramp and Derek and I went to their first show. It’s the best when people tell us they thrash to our music. Derek: We met one skater who’s now the fourth member of Awesome Color—Davey Urf, aka Lord Zurp. He’s also the coolest guy in the world.
Allison: He’s our roadie and merch-man… he even learned how to drive stick so he could be our driver in Europe. He plays tambourine on the new record and he can order for all of us at Cracker Barrel.
A lot of you will understand the value of this album, the rest should take my word and download it anyway. It’s a classic and is pretty rare in vinyl world. Hit me back and lemme know what you think.
