Artist Spotlight – Booka B
I like this guys style a lot. Really dope. I think he could get a bit better with his color choices, but his style is very fresh.
Here is what I could find about him on Juxtapoz and below that are all the cool artwork of his I could find. Enjoy.
“Meet Booka B, an artist, musician, and teacher from Saint Paul, Minnesota. His talent speaks for itself, with obvious similarities to one of our all-time favorites, Barry McGee, but with its own unique bent. Booka says, “The artwork is a response to everything that I’ve seen, heard, and influenced me throughout my life. As kind of a quiet person, it’s my way of saying, ‘I fucking exist, people!’”
Booka paints in acrylic on masonite, cutting boards, found wood, or old canvas from thrift stores. “A busted piece of wood or an old thrift store painting is more approachable and inspiring to me than a brand new canvas. I can also appreciate the history of an object. It all becomes part of the piece,” he explains.
Booka has been painting since childhood, when he used paint markers to create elaborate drawings on the grip tape of his skateboard. “Not having the internet, my strongest influences were the local graffiti artists, skateboard magazines, album art, and my older brother.” Booka took these influences, added his own style, and, when not creating his own art, now teaches painting and beat-making classes to a new generation of creative minds. “I paint to stay sane, or relatively sane,” he comments. “I go a little crazy if I’m not being productive, whether it’s painting or music. The challenge for me is finding a balance between the two.”
Booka B has created a tremendous amount of artwork, most of which you can see at his online portfolio, but first take a peek at some of our favorite pieces this way…”

FYI-the first piece on this page is not my work. It’s just a pic that I snapped in Amsterdam. I understand that next to the rest of my work on flickr this may be a bit misleading.
PEACE.
