Al Green “Lay It Down: Sampler” & THE GREEN ALBUM

For those who don’t know, I will be releasing “THE GREEN ALBUM” the same day Al Green will be releasing “Lay It Down”.  THE GREEN ALBUM is a project I’ve had mostly finished for 3 years now. It’s a full-length hip hop remix album over all Al Green sample-made beats.  Most of the songs being remixed come from hip hop’s “golden era.”  Artist such as De La Soul, Mos Def, Big L, Ghostface, Method Man, Notorious B.I.G., Pharcyde, Fugees, Jay-Z, Das Efx, and Slum Village.  I added a few other artists that I’m a fan of such as MF DOOM, Saukrates, and FINALE (from Detroit).  

One my greatest challenges was finding the acapellas I wanted to work with.  Tons of groups like Smif n Wesson, The Roots, ATCQ, and plenty other didn’t really have acapellas to their older music that I wanted to remix.  Also, I would have loved to remix MY favorite song on an album instead of the hit single, but you can’t find those acapellas.

Regressing, it took Al Green uniting with Questlove to make the most awaited Al Green album in years for me do finish THE GREEN ALBUM and finally share it with the world.  Over the past month, I’ve been putting a few small finishing touches on songs and bouncing each pro tools track so I can bring them over to my boy Haircut for mixing and mastering.

The idea is to start leaking some of the songs a week or so before “Lay It Down” comes out.  Then drop the album the same day… MY BIRTHDAY.  Yes.. the stars aligned.  My favorite artist of all time, Al Green (along with Bob Marley) will be dropping his album on my birthday.  What better time for me to finish THE GREEN ALBUM?
