Pete Rock calls out Kanye West and others for being lazy

I found this on the No ID vs Traxster blog…

In a newly-published interview at purist Hip Hop blog UnKut.com, legendary producer, emcee and deejay Pete Rock seems to be criticizing Kanye West, an artist who many critics have aligned as a disciple of the Chocolate Boy Wonder. The interview originally appeared in Hip-Hop Connections magazine. After the interviewer mentioned that West had told Scratch magazine, “I’ll sample drums off of a Pete Rock instrumental album if they’re open,” the trailblazing New York producer stated, “I believe it! I hear my snares out there, and I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s fuckin’ crazy, man!’ I feel like that’s lazy shit. You obviously don’t love it as much as I do, because for you to not go out there and find it on your own…you’ll find so much if you just take the time out to go dig, man. We do all the hard work so y’all can just snatch our records up and listen for open snares and kicks? That’s some wack shit. I respect cats that come with their own sound.” Although at no point did Pete Rock mention West in his answer, he did go on to cite J. Dilla as an example of a top-notch producer using his own drum programming for records.

  2. I whole heartedly agree with The Soul Survivor.
Taking other cats drum sounds is definitely lazy.
My boy The Organizer digs, and digs, and digs and has been praised by everyone who hears his tracks because of the original snares and kicks…
