Slum Village – “Fantastic Vol. 2: Original Samples” (free download)

Last night at my Dad’s Cousin’s wedding in Israel, the DJ was playing some really good songs.  Much better than I ever expected some random DJ at a kibbutz.

At some point, I hear a familiar song that I realize is “Clair” by Singer Unlimited.  Like most of you I’m guessing, I know the song as the original sample for “Players” by Slum Village.  What caught me off guard was both my parents AND grandmother singing the song… haha.
So I decided to find it online and ran into this gem.
Fantastic Vol. 2 is one of Hip Hop’s all-time greatest albums and classics of all time.  It’s a flawless album, even within it’s “flaws.”  It’s an album that has continually grown on my over the years and one of the few that continue to do so (I actually didn’t think it was that outstanding when I first heard it).
Anyways, that’s what we do here… find the goods and share them with you.  Enjoy.

BTW, that writing at the top right of the album cover “Barak” is written above in Hebrew.  Barak means thunder.  Just a little trivia that happens to be even more relevant as I sit typing this in the middle of Tel Aviv.

  2. cool!!

  3. Thanks man GREAT POST!!! There were only few problems. Bill Evans “All The Things You Are” & “Butter” by ATCQ were missing and the Herbie Hancock joint “I thought it was you” was missing also but it was replaced with George Clinton’s “Atomic Dog”. But other than that this is probably one of the best Dilla sample sources so far that actually list the original artist. Thanks again!!!

  7. Nice post. I’m with you. I picked up the album, played it a couple times, and then let it collect dust for a few months. For whatever reason, I popped it in the player one day and was blown away. What had I done…
